THE SILENT FRAMES
book design
PROJECT MANDATE
Creation of a book cover and page layouts for the photographer Olga Karlovac.
Karlovac, a self-taught photographer from Dubrovnik, Croatia, is recognized for her distinctive black and white photography style and her trilogy of self-published photo books. Her captivating images blur the lines between reality and poetic abstraction, leading viewers through surreal landscapes and inviting them to immerse themselves in her photographs.
DESIGN THINKING
Upon reviewing her work, it became clear to me that the book should embody the essence of a traditional photo book while embracing a straightforward approach. This insight was inspired by her profound appreciation for the simplicity and emotional resonance found in black and white imagery.
Her photos often feature a gentle blur, reminiscent of watercolour paintings, as she skillfully captures transient moments and emotions that extend beyond the tangible. This ability imbues her scenes with a captivating allure, drawing viewers into compelling narratives.
DESIGN MAKING
The completed book features her black and white photography, mirroring the minimalist and eerie style evident in her work. The layouts are tailored to highlight the simplicity and elegant beauty of her images, with generous white space and numerous pages dedicated to showcasing her photos. This creates a visually pleasing presentation throughout the book.
Having been acquainted with her work beforehand, I genuinely enjoyed designing and presenting her photos in a manner that captures her unique style.
